History Machine #3: A brief history of National Heroes Day in the Philippines

How to Celebrate National Heroes Day at Home | Lumina HomesHello internet users. I hope everyone is doing fine. Welcome to the third segment of History Machine where I tackle anything regarding history, mostly coming from the Philippines. Filipinos today celebrate National Heroes Day throughout the entire archipelago. This holiday started all the way back when the Philippines was still a colony of America. Filipino leaders who aspired for independence enacted a law on October 28, 1931 through Republic Act No. 3827 declaring the last Sunday of August of every year an official national holiday. Before the start of the Second World War, it was commemorated on November 30, 1941 but former president Jose P. Laurel signed Executive Order 20 on March 20, 1942 moving National Heroes Day on November 30. Former president Elpidio Quirino modified it to be set on the last Sunday of August after the war concluded. The last amendment was made by former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo through Republic Act 9492 making National Heroes Day be observed on the last Monday of August.

And there you have it, the brief history of my country’s National Heroes Day. I hope I was able to plant in your minds some seeds of wisdom through this post. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you again soon.
